Learning Objectives:

• Discuss the prevalence and impact of poor adherence to medicines on human and economic costs.
• Describe the impact of various employers and insurers activities to increase adherence rates to medicines in patients with specific chronic diseases.  
• Discuss opportunities to improve adherence by incorporating measures of adherence into efforts to improve quality, enhancing medication therapy management (MTM), developing health information technology (HIT), and funding additional research into best practices around adherence. 
• Describe the role of the pharmacist and patient education in improving adherence to medicines.
