Job Description

The Director of the Pharmacy oversees the utilization of the information and technical resources required for the successful operation of all Health System Inpatient and Outpatient Retail Pharmacies. This individual leads the planning, design, implementation, evaluating and monitoring of the system wide corporate pharmacy plan and ensures organization values are reflected in all aspects of the system-wide process.

Duties of this position include developing short and long term goals for the Health system pharmacies. These goals will improve quality, control utilization and contain costs.

The Director is responsible for formulating, implementing and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures required to operate system pharmacies, and to meet standards of licensing, accreditation and regulatory requirements. He/She will maintain an atmosphere that encourages high performance and team work.


The Director also oversees the development of standards for implementing pharmaceutical robotics, and identifies automation and information system needs and standards; leads the preparation of the annual Financial Plan and monitors compliance to the plan and assesses and analyzes systems/practices and their cost effectiveness.


Additional responsibilities include oversight of the purchase of medications and pharmaceuticals utilized; monitoring pharmaceutical operating efficiencies and contract purchases throughout the system and ensuring all medications are stored according to established security and environmental conditions.


The Director leads the design, development, maintenance of and compliance with the system wide drug formulary; oversees the development of clinical/pharmaceutical intervention programs and oversees the development of alternative drug utilization programs and drug use evaluations. He/she oversees the education of physicians, nurses, committees, etc. regarding the importance of appropriate drug use, cost controls, use of cost efficient drugs and new drugs.


The successful candidate must be a graduate of and an accredited college of pharmacy with a valid Pharmacy License. A Masters or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree is required. In addition, he/she must have held a leadership position in a sophisticated hospital pharmacy for 5 to 7 hears. Interpersonal skills should include the ability to effectively interact with associates, patients, physicians and other individuals.


The Director reports to The Vice-President of Professional Services. The Pharmacy department has approximately 120 FTEs including 45 Pharmacists. The department has a Robot and uses Pyxis dispensing machines.


The Pharmacy Department has teaching relationships with two Universities.


The successful candidate will have excellent clinical and administrative skills. They must understand the complicated clinical programs within the Pharmacy and have the business perspective necessary for planning, budgeting and to bring about process improvement. Experience with an electronic medical record conversion would be a plus.
