December 1978

The Black of Pharmacists of ASHP is formed in San Antonio, Texas.

 

December 1979

The Black of Pharmacists of ASHP holds it's first official business meeting and begins the tradition of an annual luncheon in Las Vegas, Nevada. The name of the organization is changed to the Association of Black Hospital Pharmacists (ABHP).

 

August 1983

Publication of the ABHP Newsletter, the first ABHP Newsletter. The Awards program is formed to recognize the outstanding achievements of pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists. Allen L. Brown is the first Chairperson of the Committee.

 

August 1984 - ABHP holds first elections.  First officers were John J. Scrivens, Jr. (President), Miriam Mobley-Smith (Vice-President for Administration), Theotus Butler (Vice President for Development), Sarah Sanders (Secretary), Frank S. Emanuel (Treasurer), and Georgia Thomas (Publicist).

 

March 1985

With the assistance of member Col. Samuel Shannon, ABHP gets 501 (C)(6) Tax Exempt status. 

 

November 1985

The ABHP Newsletter wins the Indiana Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Bronze Quill Award in the category of Non-Profit Organizations.

 

December 10, 1985

The following Committees are formed: Membership Committee, Educational Affairs Committee, and Fund-raising Committee. ABHP participates in the first National Survey of Black Pharmacists.

 

April 16-18, 1986

ABHP presented its first international Symposium.  The topic of symposium was "New Horizons in Cancer Chemotherapy: A Focus on Special Populations" in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

 

July - August 1990

ABHP participates in first National Pharmacy Summit in Orlando, Florida.  The National Pharmaceutical Association hosted the summit.  Other participating organizations included: the national pharmacy alumni associations of Howard University, Xavier University, Florida A&M University, and Texas Southern University.  Dr. Louis P. Sullivan, Secretary of Health and Human Services was keynote speaker.

 

December 1995

ABHP approves the formation of regional chapters.

 

July 13, 1996

The first of a series of region seminars is held in Washington, DC. Registrants were treated to 6 hours of continuing education on the subject of "Diabetes: A Serious Disease - An Excellent Opportunity to Provide Pharmaceutical Care."

 

February 1997

ABHP is highlighted in an article entitled "African-American Pharmacists: Making a Difference" in the ASHP Newsletter.

 

March 1997

ABHP is highlighted in an article entitled "Association of Black Hospital Pharmacists (ABHP) Holds Seminar on the Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes" in the Miami Voice Newspaper.

 

June 25-29, 1997

ABHP participates in the second National Pharmacy Summit in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

 

December 10, 1997

The first annual Wendell T. Hill Award is presented to Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fannin, Dean Hampton University, College of Pharmacy. The award, named in honor of the first African-American President of the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP), gives recognition to an individual who, through their dedication, interest and enthusiasm, has made significant contribution to the practice of pharmacy.

 

November 22, 2000

ABHP launches it website: myabhp.org

 

December 2002

The first Allen L. Brown Cardiovascular Lecture is presented. Named in honor of one the ABHP's most admired charter member, the lecture series attempts to solicit recently completed research papers from pharmacy residents or undergraduate students focusing on healthcare disparities affecting minorities with emphasis on cardiovascular diseases.
